0035: Fuse

Status: Accepted.

Context

cast ... face NAME names one half of a split card. A split card with fuse, such as Wear // Tear, a common sideboard card, can be cast with both halves at once, and the format had no way to say so.

Decision

  1. cast from ZONE fused casts both halves. fused takes the place of face.
  2. Stack snapshots show fused in the same place.
  3. Targets are written left half first, then right half, the order the halves' instructions are followed in.

Rules basis

Checked against the Comprehensive Rules effective 2026-09-25.

  • 702.102a: "If a player casts a split card with fuse from their hand, the player may choose to cast both halves of that split card rather than choose one half. This choice is made before putting the split card with fuse onto the stack. The resulting spell is a fused split spell."
  • 702.102b: "A fused split spell has the combined characteristics of its two halves."
  • 702.102c: "The total cost of a fused split spell includes the mana cost of each half."
  • 702.102d: "As a fused split spell resolves, the controller of the spell follows the instructions of the left half and then follows the instructions of the right half."

Alternatives rejected

  • A split card cast without face means fused. Rejected: a missing field should not carry meaning, and a writer that forgot face would silently produce a fused spell.
  • Two face clauses. Rejected: face names one face, and two of them read as a contradiction.

Consequences

  • Spec sections 7.1 and 9.9 and the grammar add fused.
  • examples/more-situations.md shows Wear // Tear cast fused.
