Cost changes
Thalia and Trinisphere
PlayerB controls Thalia, Guardian of Thraben (#30, "Noncreature spells cost {1} more to cast") and an untapped Trinisphere (#31, "each spell that would cost less than three mana to cast costs three mana to cast"). PlayerA casts Thoughtseize, whose mana cost is {B}:
5:10 #2 "Thoughtseize" cast from hand
5:10 #2 "Thoughtseize" target "PlayerB"
5:10 #2 "Thoughtseize" cost {B} -> {1}{B} by #30
5:10 #2 "Thoughtseize" cost {1}{B} -> {2}{B} by #31
5:10 "PlayerA" pay {U}{B}{B} by cost:#2- The total cost is worked out after the targets are chosen and before it is paid (CR 601.2f), so the
costlines sit between thetargetline and thepayline. - Thalia's increase applies first. Trinisphere applies last, because it sets the total cost once increases and reductions are done ("Once the total cost is determined, any effects that directly affect the total cost are applied", CR 601.2f). {1}{B} is two mana, so Trinisphere makes it {2}{B}.
- Thoughtseize would cost {2}{B} under Trinisphere alone, but Thalia's line is still written: both effects applied, and each line names one of them.
- Generic mana in a cost can be paid with any type of mana (CR 107.4b), so {2}{B} is paid with {U}{B}{B}. Paying the changed cost counts as paying the original cost (CR 118.7).
- If Trinisphere were tapped, its ability would not apply, so there would be no line for it. A spell whose cost nothing changes has no
costline at all.
Phyrexian mana: Dismember
With the same Thalia (#30) and Trinisphere (#31) on the battlefield, PlayerA casts Dismember ({1}{B/P}{B/P}) on PlayerB's Scion of Draco, paying both Phyrexian symbols with life:
5:40 #3 "Dismember" cast from hand
5:40 #3 "Dismember" choose symbol {B/P} life
5:40 #3 "Dismember" choose symbol {B/P} life
5:40 #3 "Dismember" target #41 "Scion of Draco"
5:40 #3 "Dismember" cost {1} -> {2} by #30
5:40 #3 "Dismember" cost {2} -> {3} by #31
...
5:41 "PlayerA" pay {U}{B}{C} by cost:#3
5:41 "PlayerA" life 14 -> 10 by cost:#3- How each hybrid or Phyrexian symbol will be paid is announced with the other cost choices, before targets (CR 601.2b). Each symbol gets its own
choose symbolline. - The total cost is then worked out from what was announced. Paying 4 life leaves {1} of mana, which Thalia makes {2} and Trinisphere makes {3}. The life is part of the cost, so its line is
by cost:#3. - Paying with mana instead would be two
choose symbol {B/P} {B}lines and a cost of {1}{B}{B}. Thalia would make it {2}{B}{B}, which is already four mana, so Trinisphere would add nothing and write no line. The announcement changes the result, which is why it is recorded. Seedecisions/0033-hybrid-and-phyrexian-mana.md.
Delve: Murktide Regent
PlayerA casts Murktide Regent ({5}{U}{U}), exiling Fatal Push and Consider from their graveyard with delve:
7:02 #6 "Murktide Regent" cast from hand
...
7:03 #9 "Fatal Push" move graveyard -> exile with #6 by cost:#6
7:03 #10 "Consider" move graveyard -> exile with #6 by cost:#6
7:03 "PlayerA" pay {U}{U}{B}{C}{C} by cost:#6
...
7:06 #6 "Murktide Regent" resolve
7:06 #6 "Murktide Regent" move stack -> battlefield pt 5/5 by rule:resolve
7:06 #6 "Murktide Regent" counters "+1/+1" 0 -> 2 by #6- Delve is not a cost change: it lets cards from the graveyard pay for generic mana once the total cost is known (CR 702.66a, 702.66b). So there is no
costline. Each exiled card is a move causedby cost:#6, next to thepayline. Two cards and five mana pay for {5}{U}{U}. with #6links the exiled cards to Murktide. It "enters with a +1/+1 counter on it for each instant and sorcery card exiled with it", and cards exiled to pay a permanent spell's cost stay linked to the permanent it becomes (CR 607.2q), so the link survives the move from the stack to the battlefield. Keyframes list#9 "Fatal Push" exile with #6.- Murktide enters with its counters (CR 122.6), so it enters as a 5/5 and the
countersline follows the move. There is noptline, because its power and toughness never changed after it entered. - Convoke and improvise are written the same way, with a
tap ... by cost:IDline for each creature or artifact tapped. Seedecisions/0034-delve-convoke-and-improvise.md.
Casting for free: cascade into Living End under Trinisphere
PlayerA casts Violent Outburst ({1}{R}{G}, cascade) while PlayerB controls an untapped Trinisphere (#31). Violent Outburst already costs three mana, so Trinisphere doesn't change it. The cascade trigger finds Living End, which has no mana cost:
6:30 new ability #51 triggered of #50 "Violent Outburst" "Cascade (When you cast this spell, exile cards from the top of your library until you exile a nonland card that costs less. You may cast it without paying its mana cost. Put the exiled cards on the bottom in a random order.)" controller "PlayerA" in stack

6:36 #54 "Living End" cost {0} -> {3} by #31
...
6:37 "PlayerA" pay {B}{R}{G} by cost:#54
6:37 #52 "Forest" move exile -> library bottom by #51
6:37 #53 "Swamp" move exile -> library bottom by #51
6:37 #51 cease by rule:resolve- Cascade exiles cards one at a time from the top, so each is
top 1when it is introduced. They are exiled face up, so they are named. - Living End is cast while the cascade trigger is resolving, so its
castline names the trigger as its cause (by #51). A card cast as the player's own action has no cause on itscastline. - Casting a spell without paying its mana cost is an alternative cost (CR 118.9), recorded like any other:
choose cost "without paying its mana cost". Living End has no mana cost, which normally can't be paid, but an alternative cost can be (CR 118.6a). - Cost increases apply to an alternative cost (CR 118.9d). The alternative cost is {0}, which is less than three mana, so Trinisphere makes it {3}. If PlayerA could not pay {3}, they could not cast Living End, and it would go to the bottom with the others.
- The other exiled cards go to the bottom in a random order (CR 702.85a). The order of their lines is not their order in the library, so later keyframes give them no position.
- Casting from suspend is written the same way, with the cast caused by the trigger that removed the last time counter (CR 702.62a, 702.62d). See
decisions/0036-casting-without-paying-the-mana-cost.md.

Each copy has the original's choices (CR 707.10), so the copies also show both replicate costs, and the target line after each copy's new line replaces the copied target, Mycospawn, with one of the triggers (CR 707.10c). Mycospawn has devoid, so it is a colorless spell Consign can target (CR 702.114a). The copies were not cast (CR 707.10): an opponent's Chalice of the Void with one counter would trigger on the original Consign only, and counter it while the copies still resolve. The other two Consigns resolve the same way.
Links between objects
Ugin's Labyrinth #7 exiled Emrakul #5. Later, Labyrinth is returned to its owner's hand and played again:
11:02 #7 "Ugin's Labyrinth" move battlefield -> hand by #110

Special actions
Companion
Before the game, after the starting player is chosen, PlayerA reveals Lurrus as their companion (CR 103.2b):
0:11 "PlayerB" choose first "PlayerA"
0:12 new card #120 "Lurrus of the Dream-Den" owner "PlayerA" in outside "sideboard"
0:12 #120 "Lurrus of the Dream-Den" reveal by #120The companion is a sideboard card, so it is outside "sideboard" like any other. Revealing it is caused by its own companion ability, the same way Chancellor of the Annex's reveal is. If the opponent reveals a companion, the line is the same with their name as owner: the card is public from then on, so it is a new card, not a hidden one.
The card stays outside the game, and every keyframe lists it until it is put into the game, so a viewer at any turn can show it:
2:58 #120 "Lurrus of the Dream-Den" outside "sideboard" "PlayerA" companionOn turn 3, PlayerA pays {3} to put it into their hand:
3:00 #120 "Lurrus of the Dream-Den" special companion
3:00 "PlayerA" pay {B}{C}{C} by cost:#120
3:00 #120 "Lurrus of the Dream-Den" move outside "sideboard" -> hand by #120Putting a companion into hand is a special action (CR 116.2g). Its {3} cost is by cost: the card itself. From here it is an ordinary card in hand, and it stays in the game until the game ends (CR 702.139c), so later keyframes list it wherever it is, without companion.

6:14 #130 cease by rule:resolve- "Cards in a player's sideboard are outside the game" (CR 400.11a), and outside the game is not a zone (CR 400.11), so the card is introduced
in outside "sideboard"at the moment it is first seen. - Revealing it and putting it into the hand are both caused by the ability (#130).
- The card now stays in the game until it ends (CR 400.11b). The next game's decklist still lists it as a sideboard card, because the deck is only changed between games (CR 100.4).
- The ability text keeps the Oracle text's minus sign (U+2212). Writers record the text as their source reports it.

It is recorded like any other delayed trigger (section 9.10): a new effect caused by the card. The card stays revealed until the first turn begins (CR 103.6b), which needs no line. It then stays in PlayerA's hand, and the effect waits in every keyframe until it triggers. PlayerA's first upkeep is on turn 2:
